Nigerian singer Oludipe David, widely known as Spyro, has expressed concern over what he describes as the decline of meaningful music in today’s industry.
On the Adesope Live show, the conscious music advocate argued that modern songs prioritize entertainment and commercial success over impactful messages.
“In the past, artists were passing meaningful messages regardless of genre. But now, music is just vibes. We are just vibing,” Spyro said.
He acknowledged that enjoyable beats have their place but questioned how artists could integrate values and lessons into these “vibes.” According to him, the shift toward superficial music has contributed to broader societal issues.
“A lot of the decadence that we have in society today can be traced to the fact that music has lost its value. We are now just singing for money. Many of us are in this business for profit, not to make impact,” he added.
Spyro’s comments open the conversation about the role of artists in shaping cultural norms and whether the pursuit of commercial success has overshadowed music’s original purpose.
