Tottenham Hotspur have turned to Roberto De Zerbi in a desperate bid to avoid Premier League relegation, appointing the Italian as their third manager of a turbulent campaign following the failed tenure of Igor Tudor.
De Zerbi has agreed a five-year contract with Spurs, who sit just one point above the relegation zone with seven games remaining. Notably, the deal does not include a relegation release clause, underlining both the club’s long-term commitment and the urgency of their current situation.
Tudor departed after a disastrous 44-day spell in which he failed to secure a single Premier League victory, leaving the north London club in serious danger of their first top-flight relegation since 1977. Spurs’ hierarchy have moved swiftly, identifying De Zerbi as their unanimous choice to stabilize results and restore belief within the squad.
Travel arrangements are already being finalized for De Zerbi, although his first match in charge will come on Sunday, April 12, away at Sunderland. He is expected to work closely with existing staff, including assistant coach Bruno Saltor, who remains at the club despite Tudor’s exit.
The appointment comes after Spurs pushed aggressively to bring De Zerbi in ahead of the summer, despite the Italian previously indicating he intended to take a break following his departure from Marseille in February. Club executives believe his tactical ability and progressive style can deliver the immediate impact required to secure survival.
