Presidential elections for several sports federations will hold today (Saturday) at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) supervising the exercise to ensure transparency and due process.
The elections follow weeks of controversy and interventions by the NSC aimed at guaranteeing credible and fair leadership transitions across the federations.
In the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, is strongly tipped to emerge as president after confirming his intention to contest.
Ochei, recently nominated by the NSC as the Sponsorship/Philanthropist representative on the federation’s board, has long been a major supporter of Nigerian tennis, notably sponsoring the Wheelchair Tennis Championship for several years.
Stakeholders have reportedly been lobbying him to run for the top position, while efforts are also underway to bring former tennis stars Nduka Odizor, David Imonitie, and Sadiq Abdullahi onto the board.
Explaining their support for Ochei, stakeholders’ representative Caleb Tsav said it is vital for the tennis federation to get its leadership right this time to ensure steady growth and development of the sport in Nigeria.
