Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has mourned the passing of Segun Awolowo, describing him as a distinguished figure whose contributions to Nigeria’s economic advancement will be deeply missed.
In a statement issued by his Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, Soludo conveyed his condolences to the Awolowo family, friends and associates following Awolowo’s death at the age of 62 on Thursday.
The Governor praised Awolowo’s professional excellence, noting that he was “a renowned lawyer, national patriot and prominent figure within the investment and export sector of Nigeria and Africa, who stood for excellence and dedication in public service.”
He added that as a grandson of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the deceased “embodied the principles of integrity, service, and leadership that his grandfather championed throughout his life.” According to the Governor, Awolowo was “a proud scion of the Awolowo dynasty” and a “vital contributor to Nigeria’s economic landscape,” widely recognised for his efforts to elevate standards of trade and investment across the continent.
Soludo highlighted Awolowo’s leadership at the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, where he served as Executive Director from 2013 to 2021, noting that he “championed initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth and sustainable development in Nigeria.” He also acknowledged Awolowo’s influence on entrepreneurship and innovation, saying his work “inspired countless individuals and businesses, reinforcing the role of the private sector in driving national progress.”
The statement further recalled his unanimous election in July 2021 as President of the National Trade Promotion Organisations for ECOWAS member states, emphasising that his “untiring passion for advancing Nigeria’s position in global markets will be sorely missed.”
Governor Soludo extended his sympathies to the Awolowo family, Ogun State government, friends and associates, praying that Awolowo’s soul “find eternal rest” and that “the family he left behind be comforted.”
