In a show of solidarity with local businesses, Anambra Statetate Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has toured Onitsha markets on Monday, marking a renewed push to break the hold of prolonged shutdowns on trade.
The governor visited key trading zones, including Ose Market, Bright Street, Lagos Line and Emeka Offor Plaza, engaging directly with traders and assuring them that fears of enforcement by rogue elements have ended.
Accompanied by top government officials, Soludo emphasized that the Monday sit-at-home, originally enforced by separatist groups in 2021, no longer affects commerce. He encouraged residents to reclaim their workweek and participate fully in the economy.
“Ndi Anambra are taking back their day, their economy, and their future”, Governor Soludo told traders during the visit, underlining the state government’s commitment to a safe and thriving business environment.
The visit comes as a turning point for Onitsha markets, which had faced repeated disruptions following the 2021 sit-at-home orders imposed by separatist groups.
The prolonged closures significantly affected traders’ livelihoods and disrupted the flow of goods across the South-East. By personally engaging with market stakeholders, Governor Soludo signaled a new era of stability, aiming to restore not just commerce but also public confidence in the safety and reliability of Anambra’s trade hubs.
