The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, has said Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has revolutionised the state’s health sector through the construction of five new general hospitals and the rehabilitation of over 130 others, including primary healthcare centres, across the state within three years.
Obidike stated this on Thursday at the premises of the newly constructed Solution Trauma Centre, Awka, during a media tour of health facilities built by the Soludo administration.
He said the tour was organised to brief residents on the governor’s achievements in revamping the healthcare sector and to dispel rumours aimed at discrediting his administration’s efforts.
The commissioner listed the five newly constructed general hospitals as the Okpoko General Hospital in Ogbaru Local Government Area; Solution Specialist Hospital, Fegge, Onitsha South LGA; Solution Rehabilitation Centre, Nibo, Awka South LGA; Ekwulobia General Hospital in Aguata LGA; and Solution General Hospital, Anaku, Ayamelum LGA.
According to him, the governor also rehabilitated several hospitals, including Umueri General Hospital in Anambra East LGA, Enugwu-Ukwu General Hospital in Njikoka LGA, and the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku-Awka, as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery and bring quality medical services closer to the people.
He said the new and renovated facilities were fully functional and equipped with 24-hour solar-powered electricity, adding that antenatal care, childbirth, and various surgeries were being offered free of charge.
Obidike said, “The state government has taken significant steps to improve the healthcare sector. This will ensure increased access to quality healthcare for residents regardless of financial status.
He added that the ongoing media tour aimed to showcase the governor’s projects and demonstrate accountability to the people, saying, “We want Ndi-Anambra to see what their tax money is doing.”
Obidike disclosed that about 130 hospitals, including primary healthcare centres, had been fully rehabilitated, while five new ones had been completed with solar lighting, steady water supply, and 30kV generators.
He noted that the Solution Trauma Centre, Awka, and the Solution Specialist Hospital, Fegge, Onitsha, were nearing completion and would soon be officially commissioned.
“We have migrated to a digitalised healthcare system in Anambra through the introduction of telemedicine. There are also 40 functional ambulance stations across major hospitals in the state, and 1,500 health workers have been recruited so far”, he said.
Obidike said the administration’s long-term goal was to make Anambra a medical destination comparable to India within five years.
He also highlighted the rehabilitation of the Nibo Rehabilitation Centre, which had been abandoned for years, noting that it now features modern facilities, a skills acquisition unit, and recreational spaces.
