Liverpool manager Arne Slot has acknowledged that his team were outplayed tactically by Manchester City during their 3-0 Premier League defeat at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
City went ahead through Erling Haaland, before Nico Gonzalez doubled the advantage before half-time. Jeremy Doku capped the dominant display with a brilliant third in the second half, cutting Arsenal’s lead at the top to four points.
Speaking during an interview, Slot said City’s structure caused Liverpool significant problems.
“First half, they were dominating completely. We struggled a lot with the amount of players they bring in between the lines,” he said.
“We went 2-0 behind – then it is even harder – when you come here to change things around in the second half.”
Slot also questioned the decision to rule out Virgil van Dijk’s header, which would have levelled the game at 1–1.
“For me, that is a goal,” he insisted. “Immediately after the game, people showed me the goal City made away at Wolves last season. For me, that is a similar one.”
He expressed surprise that the assistant referee’s flag came so late.
“It took 14 seconds before he raised his flag. These things didn’t help us, but again, City being 2-0 up at half-time was a fair reflection of the score.”
The defeat leaves Liverpool in eighth place, facing increasing pressure to rediscover form in the title race.
