Six people have been confirmed dead in a road accident at Manyatta area, Taita-Taveta County, along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The accident which occurred today (Thursday) at around 5:10am involved a bus belonging to Chania Executive Company and a trailer managed by Keitata Company.
The impact left the passenger vehicle severely damaged. The stretch of the road near Maungu in Voi Sub-County is considered a black spot, according to authorities.
Police officers and other emergency responders later arrived at the scene and coordinated rescue efforts to evacuate passengers and secure the area.
Coast traffic boss Asha Wario confirmed the incident saying the bus was heading to Mombasa direction while the trailer was heading towards Nairobi when the accident occurred.
“On reaching the location of the accident, the trailer driver, due to unknown reason, left his proper lane and collided head on with the bus and six unknown passengers died on the spot,” said Ms Wario.
In the incident both vehicles were extensively damaged, while drivers of the two vehicles and six other passengers were seriously injured and were taken to the Moi Referral hospital in Voi.
Last week, Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads amid the ongoing rainy season, which has previously been associated with an increase in road accidents.
