Following the decision of the Rivers State House of Assembly to suspend impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, the governor has made his first major cabinet appointments aimed at strengthening his administration.
Governor Fubara appointed Dagogo Wokoma as Secretary to the State Government and Sunny Ewule as Chief of Staff.
The resolution to discontinue the impeachment process was adopted during a sitting of the state assembly in Port Harcourt.
Speaker Martin Amaewhule said the development followed the latest intervention by President Bola Tinubu in the political dispute in the state.
According to the Speaker, the resolution emerged from a series of meetings involving the President, principal officers of the state assembly, disputing parties, and traditional and political leaders from Rivers State.
As part of the agreement, the governor, his deputy, and the legislature also agreed to withdraw all impeachment-related cases pending in court.
Meanwhile, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, Nyesom Wike, expressed optimism that the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State may be nearing a permanent settlement following what he described as decisive presidential intervention.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja while inspecting ongoing infrastructure projects, Wike praised President Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as a unifying figure capable of restoring stability between the executive and legislative branches of the state.
He expressed hope that the dispute would be finally resolved, saying, “By the grace of God, this will be the last time the President will be drawn into this matter, and the Rivers people will not have to witness this kind of political discord again.”
