Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has criticised referee Anthony Taylor for sending off Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca during the Blues’ dramatic 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea secured the win thanks to Estevao Willian’s 96th-minute strike, sparking jubilant celebrations from the home fans. Maresca sprinted down the touchline to join his players but was shown a second yellow card upon his return to the dugout.
The Italian coach had already been cautioned in the first half for dissent after protesting Taylor’s decision not to award a penalty when Alejandro Garnacho went down under a challenge from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer condemned the decision to dismiss Maresca.
“I know the laws and rules, but come on,” Shearer said. “You have just scored a brilliant late goal, your team has been superb for you under huge pressure, and he gets a yellow card for showing that emotion… I don’t get it.”
