Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has expressed doubts over Aston Villa’s ability to sustain their push in the Premier League title race, suggesting the club may eventually drop off despite their impressive league position.
While casting uncertainty over Villa’s chances of winning the title, Shearer acknowledged that Unai Emery’s side deserve to be taken seriously due to their current standing and recent performances in the English top flight.
After enduring a difficult start to the 2024/2025 Premier League campaign, Aston Villa have mounted an extraordinary recovery, climbing from 18th in the table to third place in recent weeks. Their resurgence has made them one of the standout teams in the division and a growing talking point in England’s title discussion.
Villa further boosted their credibility as genuine contenders last weekend when they defeated league leaders Arsenal 2-1 at Villa Park, a result that significantly narrowed the gap at the top and added further momentum to their remarkable turnaround.
However, despite Villa’s impressive run of form, Shearer remains unconvinced that they can maintain their current levels until the end of the season.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, he said:
“I don’t think they will win it but they have to have put themselves into the conversation.
“I don’t expect their brilliant run to continue. I don’t know… but you have to talk about them because of the way they’re playing, the results they’re getting and how consistent they’ve been.”
