Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has dismissed claims that he is using Grammy-winning singer Wizkid’s name to “revive” his career.
The allegations arose after Kuti made several critical comments about Wizkid and his fanbase during recent livestreams, prompting speculation that he was seeking attention.
Responding during one of his own livestreams, Seun Kuti insisted that his career remains strong and has never needed a revival.
“Some people are saying I am trying to use Wizkid to revive my career. When did my career die for me to be trying to revive it? Last year alone, I did 82 shows globally,” he said.
He went on to highlight his international reach, noting sold-out performances in Australia, Europe, the United States, and Brazil.
“I have people who are fans of my music worldwide. I call myself Big Bird because the sky is big for everybody. No matter how big you are, you can’t occupy the whole sky. People whose careers need revival know themselves. It is not me,” Kuti added.
The musician’s remarks come amid ongoing conversations about the legacy of Afrobeat and its contemporary stars. Seun Kuti, son of legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has been outspoken in defending the integrity of Afrobeat, critiquing some current Afrobeats artistes and clarifying his stance on industry debates.
Despite occasional controversies, Kuti maintains a strong presence on the global music stage, continuing to perform internationally while advocating for authentic Afrobeat.
