Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has revealed that Senate President Godswill Akpabio has filed a ₦200 billion defamation suit against her in connection with sexual harassment allegations she previously leveled against him.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Friday, Akpoti-Uduaghan said the suit was instituted at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja. She attached a copy of the court order by Judge U.P. Kekemeke, directing that she be served through substituted means via the Clerk of the National Assembly. The order was issued on November 6, with the case slated to commence on January 21, 2026.
Akpoti-Uduaghan said the legal proceedings will give her an opportunity to present her side of the story.
“Today, being the 5th of December, 2025, I have received notice of the newly instituted ₦200 billion suit against me by Senator Godswill Akpabio, claiming defamation over sexual harassment,” she wrote.
She added that the case offers her a chance to seek justice after the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges reportedly failed to hear her complaints, citing a separate defamation suit filed against her by Akpabio’s wife.
“Although I could not proceed to court earlier because Senate rules required me to present my case before the Ethics Committee—the same committee that recommended my suspension—I now have the opportunity to prove how I was sexually harassed,” she said.
Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that the troubles in the Senate began after she rejected sexual advances from Akpabio, claims he has denied.
In February, she stated in an interview that the Senate president made inappropriate advances toward her at his office and residence in Akwa Ibom, which she refused.
“This case allows me to demonstrate how my refusal to comply with his advances triggered a series of unprovoked and unprecedented attacks against me,” Akpoti-Uduaghan added.
