As reactions pour in following Nnamdi Kanu’s sentencing, former Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, expressed sadness over the life sentence handed to Nnamdi Kanu for terrorism but noted that the outcome did not come as a surprise, describing the verdict as expected and reflecting earlier concerns about fairness,
According to a statement released on by his Media Adviser in Abuja, Abaribe recalled earlier appeals for the Federal Government to consider granting Kanu amnesty, similar to measures extended to other groups, and said the refusal to explore such options made Thursday’s judgment foreseeable.
“Many Nigerians observed the contrast between how armed groups in the North-East and North-West were engaged and the amnesty programs in the South-South, raising concerns about fairness and equal treatment”, Abaribe said.
While acknowledging the disappointment the decision may cause, he urged citizens to remain calm and maintain faith in the justice system.
He added that further actions now rest with President Bola Tinubu and expressed hope that the President will prioritize national unity and inclusion in any subsequent decisions.
