The Senate has called on the Nigerian Armed Forces to intensify ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East by strengthening intelligence gathering, surveillance, and operational capabilities in order to tackle insecurity in the region and across the country.
The resolution followed a motion presented by Senator Tahir Monguno, who represents Borno North, concerning a recent deadly attack on a military formation in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
Raising the motion during plenary, Monguno disclosed that suspected insurgents carried out a coordinated assault on the Army base in the early hours of March 9, 2026.
According to him, the attackers advanced on the military facility from several directions and engaged troops in a prolonged gun battle that reportedly lasted for hours.
Lawmakers expressed deep concern over the casualties recorded during the attack, which claimed the life of Lieutenant Colonel Umar Faroug and other soldiers. Faroug was described as a key officer who played a significant role in facilitating the return of displaced residents to Kukawa town after the community had previously been overrun by insurgents.
During the attack, several military vehicles were reportedly set ablaze while weapons and equipment were looted by the assailants.
Senators noted that the incident appears to be part of a renewed wave of assaults targeting military positions in the North-East despite ongoing counter-insurgency efforts under Operation HADIN KAI.
While condemning the attack, the Senate commended officers and personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces for their courage and sacrifice in defending the nation against insurgency and other security threats.
The lawmakers emphasized the importance of sustaining military operations in the region, improving intelligence capabilities, and providing enhanced logistical and operational support to security forces to consolidate gains already made in the fight against terrorism.
As a mark of respect, the Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of the soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty during the attack.
