The Senate on Tuesday went into a lengthy closed-door session to deliberate on the Electoral Act Amendment Bills, as lawmakers intensified internal consultations ahead of the consideration of the proposed legislation.
The closed session, which had lasted for more than two hours as of mid-afternoon, followed renewed scrutiny by senators of the details contained in the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act.
Last week, the Senate constituted a seven-member ad hoc committee to further fine-tune the report of its Standing Committee on Electoral Matters. The committee is chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbomire and was tasked with collating additional inputs and contributions from senators ahead of Tuesday’s plenary scheduled for consideration of the highly anticipated Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
The ad hoc committee was given 48 hours to complete its assignment and submit its report back to the Senate.
However, upon reconvening for plenary on Tuesday, lawmakers again resolved to go behind closed doors, indicating ongoing consultations and internal reviews of the proposed amendments.
As of 3:00 p.m., the Senate remained in closed session, with deliberations still ongoing.
