Following committee recommendations, the Nigerian Senate on Thursday approved 64 career and non-career ambassadorial nominees to represent Nigeria abroad. The list includes 34 career ambassadors and high commissioners and 30 non-career appointees.
Among the non-career nominees confirmed were Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC, Ondo South), the immediate past INEC Chairman Professor Yakubu Mahmoud, Senator Ita Enang, Reno Omokri, Senator Grace Bent, and Senator Prof. Nora Ladi Daduut. Others include Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, former sole administrator of Rivers State and ex-Navy chief from Cross River State, Chioma Ohakim, former Imo State first lady, Abdulrahman Dambazau, former Minister of Interior and ex-Chief of Army Staff; former Minister of Health Femi Fani-Kayode, Erelu Angela Adebayo (Ekiti), and Florence Ajimobi (Oyo).
Notable career ambassadorial nominees include Sulu-Gambari Olatunji Ahmed (Kwara State), Segun Ige (Edo State) and Odumah Yvonne Ehinosen (Edo State).
The confirmations followed the presentation and consideration of the Committee on Foreign Affairs’ report by its Chairman, Sani Bello (APC, Niger North), who stated that all nominees were found suitable for their appointments, with no petitions raised against them.
During the screening exercise, Jimoh Ibrahim received a red-carpet reception as a serving senator and member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.
In his remarks, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio congratulated the appointees and urged them to represent Nigeria effectively in their respective postings. He also appealed to Senator Ibrahim to maintain contact with the Senate, emphasizing the value of his knowledge and experience.
