Security forces have stepped up operations in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, following the overnight abduction of an unconfirmed number of students from St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed that armed bandits stormed the school at about 2:00 a.m. on Friday, November 21, 2025, raiding the hostels and whisking away several students.
In a statement on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said police tactical units, military personnel, and other security agencies have been deployed to the area.
The combined team is currently combing the surrounding forests in a coordinated search-and-rescue mission.
Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Elleman, assured the public that all efforts are being made to ensure the safe return of the abducted students, urging residents to remain calm and support the operation by providing credible information.
Elleman also stated that the incident is under thorough investigation. He warned that the school’s management will face sanctions for reopening and conducting academic activities despite the state government’s earlier directive ordering the closure of schools in the area due to heightened insecurity.
Security forces remain on high alert as the search and rescue mission continues.
