The Edo State Government has ordered a suspension of school resumption for the second term across Edo Central Senatorial District in the wake of violent unrest in Ekpoma.
The closure affects both public and private schools and comes amid rising concerns over security in the area, particularly incidents of kidnapping that have unsettled residents.
Last week, a protest in Ekpoma, the headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area, escalated into violence. Several people were reportedly injured, the palace of the town’s traditional ruler was vandalized, and numerous shops were looted, disrupting commercial activities across the town.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, confirmed that schools would remain closed until further notice. He added that the government would communicate the new resumption date to the public once it is finalized.
“Parents, guardians, and all education stakeholders within Edo Central Senatorial District are advised to take note of this suspension and comply with the directive”.
The state government has not provided a timeline for the reopening of schools, citing ongoing assessments of security and related concerns in the affected communities.
