Manchester United legends Peter Schmeichel and Paul Scholes have criticised the club’s “weird” decision to replace Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund with Benjamin Sesko during the summer transfer window.
United bolstered their attack by signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo for £71 million, and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as part of Ruben Amorim’s squad overhaul.
In goal, the club also replaced Andre Onana with Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammes, valued at £18.1 million, sending the Cameroonian goalkeeper on loan to Trabzonspor.
Hojlund, meanwhile, joined Napoli on loan following Sesko’s arrival — and has already scored four goals in six games for the Italian side.
Speaking during a televised interview, Schmeichel said he found the decision puzzling, echoing Scholes’ earlier comments.
“The signing of Sesko was a bit weird to me. We had Hojlund, starved of service for two years. You only need to see what he’s doing now at Napoli with Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay to play with,” he said.
Schmeichel added that Hojlund had always shown the potential to be a prolific striker, provided he had the right support.
“I’ve consistently said Hojlund will be a 25-goal-a-season striker, but he needs service.
At the time, we brought in Cunha and Mbeumo — players who would give Hojlund first-class service.
We spent £70 million or so on Sesko, but we still don’t have that number six we should have.”
Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United will return to Premier League action this weekend with a clash against Liverpool, after beating Sunderland 2–0 before the international break.
