The Lagos State Government has confirmed the collapse of a bungalow-style classroom block at Odokekere High School in Ikorodu, describing the incident as unfortunate but assuring the public that no injuries were recorded.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), the government emphasized that all students were safe, noting that the incident occurred without any casualties.
“No casualty was recorded in the building collapse. All our students are in perfect condition,” the committee said, seeking to allay concerns among parents and residents.
The SCRPS disclosed that the collapsed structure had already been identified as unsafe and marked for demolition under an ongoing plan to rebuild and expand the school’s facilities.
The old classroom block, according to the committee, was scheduled to be replaced with a larger, modern structure designed to accommodate the school’s growing student population.
“The planned project will deliver a befitting classroom edifice capable of catering to the huge population of students in the school,” the statement noted.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has since ordered the immediate relocation of affected pupils to nearby schools to ensure that academic activities continue without disruption. The governor also directed education authorities to take all necessary measures to safeguard students and staff.
In addition, officials of the SCRPS are expected to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the site to determine the appropriate course of action and fast-track reconstruction.
“The Lagos State Government regrets this unfortunate incident,” the statement added, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to the safety and welfare of students.
The committee further assured residents that the state government remains resolute in its determination to provide safe, secure, and conducive learning environments across all public schools in Lagos State.
