Veteran Nigerian producer Samklef has sparked conversation by asserting that rapper and YBNL boss Olamide has had a greater influence on the Nigerian music industry than celebrated music executive Don Jazzy.
His comments came as a response to criticism aimed at Olamide following his statement that Wizkid is “the greatest Afrobeats artist after Fela.”
Samklef defended Olamide on X, accusing critics of undermining the rapper’s contributions. “Devil go punish anybody wey talk down on Olamide! His impact in the industry even Don Jazzy Dey learn,” he wrote.
The producer went further, praising Olamide for challenging industry norms and “breaking the chain of gatekeepers,” an achievement he claims reshaped Nigerian music dynamics. “It was Olamide who humble Don Jazzy after that Headies wahala… After Wizkid, na Olamide get the real street credibility,” Samklef added.
Both Don Jazzy and Olamide are widely recognized for launching the careers of several top artists. Don Jazzy co-owned Mo’Hits Records with D’banj, nurturing talents like Wande Coal, D’Prince, and Dr Sid, before founding Mavin Records, home to stars including Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Rema, and Ayra Starr.
Olamide, through his YBNL label, has been pivotal in developing acts such as Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh, Fireboy DML, and Asake, cementing his reputation as a major force in Nigeria’s music scene.
Samklef’s remarks have reignited debates among fans about the hierarchy of influence among Nigeria’s top music executives.
