Record producer Samklef has stirred controversy by accusing singer Davido of fueling toxicity and rivalry within the Nigerian music industry.
His comments came in response to a tweet from fellow producer-turned-singer Pheelz, who had expressed concerns over growing fanbase toxicity and comparisons among artists. Pheelz wrote, “Music was meant to be enjoyed, not to be compared. This comparison game is hurting the sound and culture more than we can ever know.”
Reacting, Samklef claimed that the Nigerian music scene was built on mutual respect during the dominance of Wizkid and Olamide, describing the period as free of rivalry and unhealthy competition.
“Music was fun when we started. When Wizkid came, there was no comparison, everything was pure love. Olamide came too, same thing. No pressure, no hatred, just music,” he said.
According to Samklef, the entry of “one Scorpio boy who moves like Diddy”, a reference to Davido, marked a turning point for the industry, introducing what he described as a “cultist mindset,” threats, fake streams, and manipulative practices.
“Then one Scorpio boy who moves like Diddy… Davido entered, and since then the industry turned toxic. Cultist mindset, threats, fake streams, dirty moves everywhere,” he added.
The producer’s remarks have sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many criticizing him for singling out Davido as the cause of the industry’s challenges. Davido has yet to respond to the allegations.
The debate highlights ongoing conversations about competition, authenticity, and respect within Nigeria’s rapidly evolving music industry.
