Mohamed Salah has confirmed he will leave Liverpool FC at the end of the season, bringing his nine-year spell at Anfield to a close after reaching a financial settlement with the club.
The Egyptian forward has reportedly agreed to waive the final £20 million year of his contract, paving the way for a free transfer this summer. The 33-year-old, who signed a two-year extension last season, will not see out the final year of that deal, effectively forfeiting wages estimated at £400,000 per week to ensure a smooth departure.
The agreement is understood to mirror a similar contractual adjustment that preceded the exit of former manager Jürgen Klopp in 2024. Talks over Salah’s future are believed to have begun in December, but tensions with current head coach Arne Slot reportedly accelerated the process.
Following a recent draw with Leeds United, Salah publicly suggested a breakdown in their relationship, accusing Slot of pushing him towards the exit.
In a poignant video message released on Tuesday, Salah confirmed his decision and reflected on his time at the club.
“Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell,” he said.
“I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life.”
“Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion. It’s a history. It’s a spirit. I can’t explain it in words to anyone not part of this club. We celebrated victory. We won the most important trophies and we fought together through the hardest time in our life.”
“I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the teammates, past and present. And to the fans, I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me, through the best time of my career, and you stood by me in the toughest times.”
“It’s something I will never forget, and something I will take with me always. Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. This club will always be my home, to me and to my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone.”
Salah leaves as one of the most iconic figures in Liverpool’s history, having scored 255 goals and won every major honour with the club, including the UEFA Champions League.
Despite his legendary status, uncertainty remains over his next destination, with reported interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer.
His agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, dismissed speculation surrounding Salah’s future, warning against misinformation.
“We do not know where Mohamed will play next season. This also means that no one else knows. Beware of the click-wh**ing attention seekers.”
