Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has criticised a fan account on X (formerly Twitter) for what he described as a “disrespectful” post comparing the club’s new attacking arrivals with former Reds Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz.
The Premier League champions spent a record £446m this summer, headlined by Florian Wirtz’s £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen and Alexander Isak’s £125m switch from Newcastle. The window also saw Hugo Ekitike (£79m), Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m), Milos Kerkez (£40m) and Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29m) join Anfield.
Departures included Núñez, who left for Al-Hilal in a €53m (£46m) deal after three inconsistent seasons, and Díaz, who joined Bayern Munich for £65.5m. The club also endured tragedy with the loss of Diogo Jota, while Trent Alexander-Arnold sealed a move to Real Madrid.
Despite Liverpool breaking the British transfer record twice in one window, the independent fan account @AnfieldEdition mocked Díaz and Núñez’s time at Anfield, posting a collage in black and white alongside colour shots of Wirtz and Isak.
Salah responded sharply, urging respect for his former teammates and calling out the account for “choosing negativity at a time the club should be celebrating progress.”
Liverpool’s £446m outlay surpassed Chelsea’s previous Premier League record of £434.5m in 2023. Player sales generated £228.1m, with Marc Guehi’s collapsed £35m move on deadline day preventing the Reds from hitting nearly £470m in spending.
