The Embassy of Russia in Nigeria has hosted a classical music concert in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen cultural relations between Nigeria and Russia.
The event brought together diplomats, academics, cultural enthusiasts, and members of the public, and featured performances by young musicians from the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory.
Speaking at the event, Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podelyshev, described the concert as a significant step toward reviving cultural dialogue between both countries.
“This evening is not simply a concert; it is an important step toward strengthening cultural dialogue… and bringing our peoples closer through music,” he said.
The ambassador noted that the initiative was supported by the Russkiy Mir Foundation and the cultural relations department of Russia’s foreign ministry.
He added that the concert marked the first major cultural event organised by the Russian Embassy in Nigeria in several years, signalling a renewed push to deepen bilateral engagement through the arts.
The envoy also acknowledged the support of Nigerian institutions, including the National Universities Commission, the Federal Ministry of Art Culture Tourism and Creative Economy, and the Nigeria Immigration Service.
Special recognition was given to Abba Music School for coordinating the event and facilitating the participation of the visiting musicians.
Podelyshev expressed optimism about expanding cultural exchange, noting that Russia is open to hosting Nigerian artists and creative groups to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
Guests were treated to a selection of classical masterpieces from Russian and global traditions, highlighting the technical excellence of the performers.
Observers say the concert reflects a broader effort by Russia to use cultural diplomacy to strengthen ties with Nigeria, particularly in education, arts, and creative collaboration.
