Sporting CP manager Rui Borges has singled out Arsenal’s David Raya as the defining figure in Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg. While the headlines were captured by Kai Havertz’s dramatic last-minute goal to seal a victory for the English side, Borges maintained that the Spanish goalkeeper’s intervention was the primary reason the hosts failed to secure a more favorable result.
Raya’s performance was characterized by a series of high-caliber saves that thwarted Sporting’s offensive efforts throughout the encounter. His ability to maintain a clean sheet until the final moments and keep the London club in the contest did not go unnoticed, as he was officially honored with the UEFA Player of the Match accolade following the final whistle.
Reflecting on the match during a post-game discussion with Prime Video, Borges acknowledged that his team’s inability to find the back of the net was less about poor finishing and more about the exceptional form of the opposition’s number one.
“Yes, I’d say David Raya was the best player on the pitch tonight because we had some really, really good chances to score, but he made some superb saves,” Borges remarked.
The Sporting coach also offered a contrasting view of the action at the other end of the field, suggesting that the scoreline did not entirely reflect the balance of play. “On the other end, our keeper Rui Silva was not overly troubled, and it was a pretty equal game,” he added, highlighting his frustration at seeing a competitive performance undermined by a single lapse in stoppage time.
Despite the narrow defeat, Borges’ analysis suggests that the Portuguese side remains confident in their ability to compete at this level, viewing Raya’s heroics as the slim margin that separated the two teams in an otherwise evenly contested European night.
