Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has called on Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah to contribute more to the team following the Reds’ 3–0 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Salah, who failed to produce a goal or assist on the night, struggled to make an impact and was often absent defensively. Rooney, speaking during a televised interview, said the Egyptian’s lack of support left right-back Conor Bradley exposed.
“Salah is in the team to score goals and create goals,” Rooney said. “In big games, you have to double up. I think Salah has to come back and help his teammate.”
The former England captain also questioned the decision to disallow Virgil van Dijk’s header that would have levelled the game at 1–1.
“It’s a really good header and the goal should’ve stood for me,” he said.
Liverpool’s disallowed equaliser came before City tightened their grip with goals from Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku. The defeat leaves Liverpool in eighth place, while City climb to second.
