Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has urged Mohamed Salah to step up his contribution after the Liverpool star struggled in Sunday’s 3–0 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad.
Salah was unusually quiet throughout the encounter, failing to score or assist, and Rooney believes the Egyptian also offered too little defensively.
Speaking during an interview, Rooney said Salah left right-back Conor Bradley exposed.
“Salah is in the team to score goals and create goals,” Rooney said. “In big games, you have to double up. I think Salah has to come back and help his teammate.”
Rooney also questioned the disallowed Virgil van Dijk goal that would have levelled the score at 1–1 before halftime.
“It’s a really good header and the goal should’ve stood for me,” he added.
Liverpool remain eighth on the Premier League table after the loss, while Manchester City climbed back to second.
