As the Group C World Cup qualifying race reaches its climax on Tuesday, Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr has raised concerns over what he described as an uneven fixture schedule that favoured South Africa.
Speaking to journalists in Uyo ahead of the Cheetahs’ decisive encounter with the Super Eagles of Nigeria, the Franco-German tactician pointed out that South Africa had played seven home games out of their ten qualifiers — a situation he believes gave them a significant advantage.
“My team is ready, they made good progress and worked hard,” Rohr said.
“But when you see that South Africa, from the ten games, played seven at home — only two away in Rwanda and Nigeria — it’s not equal. Against us, it was in Ivory Coast. That’s a big advantage for them.”
Despite his criticism, Rohr said his focus remains on ensuring his side plays with joy and discipline in Uyo.
“We are here to enjoy this game, not only to stress about the result,” he added. “We want to play good football in a good spirit.”
A win or draw for Benin Republic will secure them a historic first-ever World Cup qualification, while Nigeria must win to keep their hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico alive.
Rohr will also be facing a familiar side — the Super Eagles he managed at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
