Rivers United endured a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Egyptian champions Pyramids FC during their CAF Champions League matchday one clash in Cairo on Saturday.
Ahmed Atef was the star for the home side, netting all three goals in the second half to secure the comprehensive win. Rivers United had shown resilience in the first half, restricting Pyramids FC to only a few half-chances.
However, the Nigerian side’s resistance collapsed after the break. Atef broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, then quickly doubled the lead in the 57th minute, before completing his hat-trick in the 72nd minute.
Rivers United will look to bounce back when they host Moroccan side RS Berkane in their matchday two fixture in Uyo next Friday.
