Lawmakers cite ‘division in PDP’ as reason for leaving, Assembly session turns dramatic
A major political shake-up unfolded in Rivers State on Friday as Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Amaewhule’s departure came alongside that of 15 other lawmakers, marking one of the most significant mass defections in the state in recent years.
The lawmakers made their announcement during plenary, stating that persistent turmoil and what they described as a “clear division” within the PDP had compelled them to leave the party.
Those who joined the Speaker in defecting include:
- Dumle Maol, Deputy Speaker (Gokana)
- Major Jack (Akuku-Toru)
- Linda Stewart (Okrika)
- Franklin Nwabochi (Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni)
- Azeru Opara (Port Harcourt Constituency 3)
- Smart Adoki (Port Harcourt Constituency 2)
- Enemi George (Asari-Toru Constituency 2)
- Solomon Wami (Port Harcourt Constituency 1)
- Igwe Aforji (Eleme)
- Tekena Wellington (Asari-Toru Constituency 1)
- Looloo Opuende (Akuku-Toru Constituency 2)
- Peter Abbey (Degema)
- Arnold Dennis (Ogu/Bolo)
- Chimezie Nwankwo (Etche)
- Ofiks Kabang (Andoni)
The defection instantly shifts the political balance within the Assembly, giving the APC a significant boost and further weakening the PDP amid ongoing internal conflicts.
Session proceedings briefly became tense as lawmakers announced their exit, each citing party instability and unresolved leadership issues within the PDP as justification for their move.
More details are expected as political stakeholders react to the development and the Assembly leadership begins adjusting to the new composition.
