Amid rising political tension in Rivers State and the 8–8–8 deadlock in the House of Assembly, the Rivers Peace Agenda Forum has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over fresh impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the forum warned that the latest impeachment proceedings pose a serious threat to democratic governance in the state. It described the impeachment notice read on the floor of the Rivers State House of Assembly as a deliberate attempt to undermine the will of the electorate.
The group alleged that the lawmakers behind the move are acting under external influence, accusing loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of orchestrating actions aimed at destabilising the Fubara administration.
According to the forum, the impeachment effort is part of a sustained campaign to cripple governance in Rivers State since the political rift began, leaving the state trapped in legislative paralysis and denying residents the benefits of democracy.
The Rivers Peace Agenda Forum recalled the peace agreement brokered by President Tinubu in 2023 to resolve the political crisis, noting that the accord was meant to restore stability and enable effective governance. It lamented that the agreement has been repeatedly violated, further deepening divisions within the state.
The forum cautioned that the continued use of impeachment as a political tool could plunge Rivers State into prolonged instability, urging the President to intervene decisively to protect democracy, uphold the rule of law, and restore calm in the state.
