The Rivers State House of Assembly has resumed plenary after the expiration of the six-month emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025.
At its Thursday sitting the first since March 12 lawmakers unanimously adopted a motion sponsored by House Leader Hon. Major Jack, Deputy Leader Hon. Linda Somiari-Stewart, and seven others, calling for a review of funds expended during the emergency period.
Jack noted that while the emergency rule officially ended at midnight on Thursday, restoring full democratic structures, the Assembly was excluded from budgetary processes throughout the period. He said several contracts were awarded and funds drawn from the state’s Consolidated Revenue Account by the Administrator, making a probe necessary to establish accountability.
He further urged Governor Siminialayi Fubara to submit a new financial plan that reflects the aspirations of Rivers people, forward commissioner nominees for the constitution of the State Executive Council, and present an appropriation bill for the remainder of the year.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule affirmed that the Assembly would formally communicate the resolutions to the governor.
While commending President Tinubu for restoring democracy in Rivers, Jack assured that the Assembly would uphold the peace accord and work within the Constitution to promote good governance.
