Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has sparked debate by asserting that Real Madrid are not the frontrunners to claim the Champions League trophy this season. His comments followed Los Blancos’ comprehensive 5–1 aggregate dismissal of his former club in the Round of 16. Despite Madrid’s tactical masterclass—securing a 3–0 win at the Bernabéu followed by a 2–1 victory at the Etihad Tuesday night—Richards believes other European titans possess a more convincing overall profile for the title.
The second-leg triumph in Manchester was highlighted by a Vinicius Junior brace, which effectively extinguished any hope of a Cityzens comeback. However, Richards argued that the tie was swung by specific turning points, including a red card for Bernardo Silva, rather than sustained collective dominance. He suggested that while Real Madrid are masters of navigating high-pressure moments, teams like Barcelona and Bayern Munich currently exhibit a higher ceiling for consistent performance.
Reflecting on the result and the road ahead on Monday Night Football, Richards offered a cautious outlook on the Spanish side’s prospects:
“Real Madrid winning the whole thing? Right now, I’d say no. The tie vs City, individual brilliance and Bernardo’s red won them the tie. Barcelona on their day could beat anyone. Bayern are also there. If I had to bet, I’d say no on Real Madrid winning because there’s better teams. Real Madrid have players for the biggest moments. That’s what the UCL is. Couple of seasons back they got past Chelsea, City, they weren’t playing well but they just got over the line.”
Richards’ assessment points to a perceived gap between Madrid’s knack for survival and the tactical fluidity of their rivals. While he acknowledged the historical trend of Madrid winning matches they were “not playing well” in, he remains unconvinced that “moment-based” football will be enough to overcome the remaining field. As the quarter-finals approach, the veteran pundit’s skepticism sets a high bar for the 15-time winners to prove they are indeed the team to beat in this year’s competition.
