President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to remain resolute and refuse to succumb to fear following the recent wave of terrorist attacks in Borno State, assuring citizens that his administration is fully committed to defeating insurgency and restoring lasting peace across the country.
The President made the call during an interfaith breaking of fast with members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies at the State House in Abuja, amid renewed attacks in communities across Nigeria’s North-East.
Describing the incidents as cruel and inhumane, Tinubu condemned the violence, particularly the Wednesday attack in Ngoshe community where several residents were reportedly abducted.
“The latest wave of attacks, including the raid in Ngoshe where scores of residents were abducted, represents a heartless assault on innocent citizens,” the President said. “But Nigerians must remain steadfast. We will win this fight. Nigeria will prevail.”
Reports indicate that other communities affected between Wednesday and early Thursday include Konduga, Marte, Jakana, and Mainok, where residents also reported abductions and injuries following the attacks.
President Tinubu revealed that he had personally reached out to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum to express his sympathy and solidarity with the government and people of the state.
“My sympathy goes to the Vice President, the entire nation, and particularly the people of Borno State over this tragic incident. I also called Governor Zulum to share in the pain and stand in solidarity with the state,” he said.
Commending the swift response of the Nigerian military, Tinubu noted that troops engaged the attackers, neutralised several insurgents, and forced the terrorists to retreat from the affected areas. He also directed security agencies to intensify operations, rescue those abducted, and prevent further attacks on civilians and security formations in the region.
The President paid tribute to the courage and sacrifices of members of the Armed Forces and other security personnel, acknowledging the challenges they face in the line of duty.
“This nation will always remain grateful for your sacrifices. Many times you are separated from your families and face grave dangers from terrorists and bandits, yet you continue to defend our sovereignty and protect our people,” he said.
Tinubu further assured the troops that their welfare remains a priority for his administration, pledging continued support to address operational challenges, including accommodation shortages and other logistical needs.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s economic outlook, the President acknowledged that his administration inherited significant economic challenges but expressed confidence that the country is gradually returning to stability.
“When we assumed office, we faced a rough start and encountered serious turbulence. Today, however, we have stabilised the economy. We are emerging from the dark tunnel and beginning to see the light ahead,” he said.
Highlighting the significance of the interfaith gathering, Tinubu described it as a powerful symbol of Nigeria’s unity and diversity.
“This season reflects the richness and complexity of our nation. It is significant that these sacred periods coincide, reminding us of the need for unity, reflection, and peaceful coexistence,” he added.
In his remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ loyalty to the President and their unwavering commitment to protecting Nigeria’s democracy.
He expressed appreciation for recent government approvals aimed at improving the welfare of military personnel, including enhanced salaries, allowances, improved equipment, and better accommodation for troops.
“These approvals will significantly enhance our operational effectiveness. They have been well received by members of the Armed Forces, and we remain fully committed to defending our nation,” Shaibu said.
The interfaith breaking of fast brought together Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Ministers of Defence Gen. Christopher Musa and Bello Matawalle, members of the Federal Executive Council, senior military officers, and representatives of various security agencies.
The gathering underscored the Federal Government’s resolve to strengthen national unity while intensifying the fight against terrorism and insecurity across the country.
