The House of Representatives has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the payment of insurance stipends to the families of deceased National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
The directive followed a motion of urgent national importance raised during Wednesday’s plenary, which highlighted delays and irregularities in compensating the next of kin of corps members who died while serving the nation.
The House expressed concern over reports that some families had yet to receive their entitled benefits, despite existing provisions under the NYSC insurance scheme. Lawmakers emphasized that timely payment of these stipends is critical to supporting bereaved families and upholding the welfare of corps members.
Accordingly, the House resolved that INEC, in collaboration with the NYSC Directorate and relevant insurance providers, should expedite verification processes and disburse all pending payments without further delay.
The resolution underscores the legislature’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of corps members and their families.
