The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review will, on Monday, hold a high-level consultative meeting with leaders of registered political parties as part of its ongoing efforts to amend the 1999 Constitution.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Akin Rotimi, spokesperson for the House of Representatives, said the engagement forms a crucial part of the committee’s broad-based stakeholder consultations designed to ensure that the review process captures the genuine aspirations of Nigerians.
“This meeting is a key component of the committee’s outreach to critical stakeholders. It aims to guarantee that the constitutional amendment process reflects the voices, concerns, and ambitions of the Nigerian people,” Rotimi stated.
According to the statement, attendees will include national chairmen, national secretaries, and national women leaders of political parties.
The meeting will focus on several priority areas, including special seats for women, judicial and electoral reforms, independent candidacy, local government autonomy, state policing, human rights, and justice sector reforms.
Rotimi added that the engagement will provide a platform for political parties to make informed contributions, share institutional perspectives, and shape the national discourse on pressing governance issues.
Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the Constitution Review Committee, described the dialogue as a strategic platform for fostering collaboration between parliament and political institutions.
“Political parties remain the engine room of our democracy,” Kalu noted. “Their active involvement in this process is essential to achieving constitutional amendments that are inclusive, credible, and truly representative of the collective aspirations of Nigerians.”
He encouraged all invited stakeholders to participate actively and constructively, adding that their insights will be invaluable in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
