A new chapter has begun for Africa’s energy industry as Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited, operator of Nigeria’s largest upstream oil and gas joint venture, unveiled its sweeping pan-African strategy at the just-concluded Africa Energy Week (AEW) 2025.
Speaking during a spotlight session at the high-profile energy conference, Tony Attah, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance, described the company as a “transformational force” positioned to lead Africa toward a more secure and sustainable energy future.
“We are Renaissance not just by name, but by mission,” said Attah. “Our goal is to drive a new era for Africa, one defined by energy security, industrial growth, and responsible operations.”
Formerly known as the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC), Renaissance now operates under its new identity following a landmark acquisition by Renaissance Africa Energy Holding Company. The company manages operations for the NNPC/Renaissance/TotalEnergies/AENR Joint Venture, with an extensive asset base spanning 18 oil mining leases in the Niger Delta region.
Attah hailed the acquisition of Shell’s stake in SPDC as a bold and visionary move, positioning Renaissance as a leading player in the continent’s evolving energy narrative.
“What many saw as ambitious, we saw as necessary. Acquiring SPDC has given us a platform to lead from the front, Renaissance is now the new face of African energy,” he said.
Adding to the company’s forward-looking vision, Chairman of Renaissance Layi Fatona, reaffirmed the firm’s Afrocentric outlook and commitment to regional leadership.
“We’re not just taking part in Africa’s energy future, we intend to shape it,” Fatona stated in a media chat at the event. “Our strategy starts in Nigeria but is built for scale across Africa. Our focus is clear: to sustainably power energy security and industrial development across the continent.”
Throughout the week-long AEW conference, which ran from September 29 to October 3, Renaissance executives played prominent roles in shaping key discussions. Attah led a fireside chat aimed at increasing brand visibility, while Fatona contributed to a panel on “Frontier Plays Within Africa’s Mature Basins”, emphasizing the untapped potential of legacy oil and gas assets in the context of Africa’s energy transition.
The company’s strong presence at the AEW 2025 underscores its ambitions not only to lead Nigeria’s oil and gas sector but also to become a dominant force across the African energy landscape.
