Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on women across the country to prioritise their health through regular self-examination and timely medical screening, as Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2025.
In a statement marking the annual campaign, Tinubu emphasised that early detection remains the most effective way to save lives and reduce breast cancer–related deaths.
“As women, mothers, sisters and daughters, our health must remain a priority,” the First Lady said. “Early detection saves lives, regular self-examination and timely medical screening are key in the fight against breast cancer.”
She encouraged Nigerians to use the month-long awareness campaign to support survivors, spread education, and foster a culture of preventive healthcare.
“Let us work together to stay healthy. Happy Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2025″, Tinubu added.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were approximately 2.3 million new breast cancer cases diagnosed globally in 2022, and about 670,000 deaths attributable to breast cancer in the same year.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed globally every October, is dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer prevention, promoting education and research, and encouraging early screening.
The initiative also aims to honour survivors and mobilise support for ongoing healthcare interventions and advocacy.
Public health experts continue to stress that regular breast self-examination, clinical screening, and mammography remain the most reliable methods for early detection, which significantly improves survival rates.
