Former Premier League star Jamie Redknapp has advised Eberechi Eze to battle for a place in Arsenal’s starting XI, insisting the England international is better suited to a central midfield role.
Eze has often been deployed on the left since joining the Gunners but impressed as a left-sided No.8 in Wednesday’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Port Vale, scoring one of the goals.
Despite his strong display, Redknapp noted that Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice, and Martin Zubimendi remain Mikel Arteta’s preferred midfield trio.
Speaking during a televised interview, Redknapp said:
“I still feel he’s better as one of those three [in midfield]. We saw the assist he made on the weekend against Man City – it was world class. He’s a fantastic player and I’d prefer to see him play more central. It’s difficult because there’s competition for places… it’s up to Eze to force his way in there.”
Arsenal will travel to Newcastle United at the weekend following their 1-1 draw with Manchester City last Sunday.
