Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has insisted that his former club are no longer realistic contenders for the Premier League title this season. His remarks followed a disappointing weekend in which both Liverpool and Manchester City suffered damaging losses that affected their positions in the EPL title race.
Arsenal now have the chance to extend their lead over Chelsea by six points if they secure victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the highly anticipated North London Derby on Sunday.
Liverpool have now fallen to six league defeats this season, leaving them positioned in the bottom half of the Premier League table and far from the title-chasing pack. Manchester City, who could have closed the gap to within a single point of Arsenal with a win against Newcastle United, instead missed the chance and failed to capitalise. Earlier in the day, Chelsea recorded a comfortable 2-0 triumph over Burnley, strengthening their growing status as a potential challenger.
Redknapp, speaking on Sky Sports after the day’s fixtures, stressed that Chelsea should now be regarded as legitimate rivals to Arsenal and Manchester City in the race for the Premier League crown. “Yeah look we can forget Liverpool,” he told Sky Sports. “They have had a few mentions tonight, but forget Liverpool. They cannot win the Premier League this year.
They’re too far gone, confidence is too low, that’ll be a miracle if they did it. So I think there’s probably three runners, but one outstanding one. Arsenal are by far the best team. They’ve got the best squad, best organised, and they’ve been the best over the last four or five years.”
Redknapp’s comments further fuel ongoing conversations surrounding Liverpool’s decline, the momentum shift at Chelsea under their current resurgence, and Arsenal’s growing dominance at the top of the Premier League standings.
