The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the commencement of major reconstruction works at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, urging travellers to adjust their schedules to avoid disruptions.
In a travel advisory issued on Friday, FAAN advised all passengers to arrive at the airport early, follow all traffic guidelines, and use designated parking areas to ease movement during the construction period.
“To ensure a smooth travel experience, we kindly request that passengers leave early for the airport to avoid missing flights, obey all traffic instructions to aid traffic flow, and park vehicles properly in designated car park areas,” the advisory read.
FAAN also cautioned that due to space limitations caused by ongoing works, only travellers should come to the airport, urging non-travelling visitors to stay away for the duration of the project.
“We appreciate your cooperation and understanding,” the statement added.
N712 Billion Upgrade Approved for Lagos Airport Modernisation
The development follows the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) recent approval of over N900 billion in aviation infrastructure projects across the country.
Among the key projects is the rehabilitation, upgrade, and complete modernisation of Terminal One at the Lagos airport, a move described by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo as the “centrepiece” of the approvals.
Keyamo disclosed that the project involves stripping the terminal to its structural base and rebuilding all core systems including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure.
The Lagos terminal rehabilitation alone is projected to cost N712.25 billion, with a 22-month timeline for completion.
