Barcelona forward Marcus Rashford matched an incredible Lionel Messi feat in the UEFA Champions League after scoring twice in the club’s 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Thursday night.
Rashford not only grabbed a brace, but also registered six shots, 10 touches inside the Newcastle box, five successful dribbles, and recorded the most possessions won (six) during the game.
According to Opta, no Barcelona player has achieved such a statistical performance in a Champions League match since Messi in 2015.
Speaking after the match, Barça manager Hansi Flick hailed the on-loan Manchester United forward, saying Rashford’s display was “just the first step in the right direction” as he continues his adaptation at the club.
