Veteran Spanish manager Rafa Benitez is set to make a sensational return to football management with Panathinaikos, where he will become the highest-paid coach in Greek football history.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss has been without a club since leaving Celta Vigo in March last year. Reports indicate that Benitez has agreed to a two-year contract worth £3.47 million, following a meeting with Panathinaikos president Giannis Alafouzos in London.
The Greek giants currently sit seventh in the league with nine points from six matches, trailing leaders PAOK by eight points, though they still have a game in hand.
Benitez’s arrival marks a major statement of intent for Panathinaikos, who are seeking to end a 15-year league title drought, having last lifted the championship in 2010 and only twice in the 21st century.
