In a sweeping crackdown that has sent shockwaves through the city’s nightlife scene, 107 establishments, including popular spots such as Quiver, 1824 and Bar Next Door, have been given seven days to comply with authorities or shut down.
The order for closure by the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) follows an intensive inspection campaign targeting safety breaches and licensing violations.
In a public notice issued on Monday, September 22, 2025, the regulator said the action takes effect immediately, giving listed facilities seven days to obtain the necessary licenses or face closure.
“In order to preserve and maintain public health and the environment, EMCA, under Section 101, mandated the Authority to develop standards and guidelines for the abatement of unnecessary noise,” NEMA stated in the notice.
“NEMA has been receiving public noise pollution complaints from the public regarding clubs/lounges, bars and restaurants across the country,” the notice dated 8th September reads in part.
“Several facilities have been served with Environmental Restoration Orders requiring them to provide environmental compliance documents but majority have failed to comply.”
Among other targeted facilities are popular entertainment spots such as Jambo Lounge, Cool Breeze Bar in Ruiru, Havana Lounge along Northern Bypass, Quiver Lounge in Eastlands, Kettle House, Ibiza Club and Paris Club.
Several hotels and restaurants have also been cited, among them Clarion Hotel in Westlands and Eclipse Lounge located in Tatu City, Kiambu.
This crackdown aligns with Kenya’s preparations for World Cleanup Day 2025, as NEMA intensifies efforts to combat textile waste and other environmental threats.
Business operators have been instructed to submit the required documentation to NEMA’s Nairobi headquarters within the specified deadline.
They are required to provide to the Authority the following documents;
- The certificate of incorporation and list of Directors/owners (CR – 12)
- Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) License for the facility
- The current Environmental Audit (EA)
- Noise pollution control measures in place
- Reasons why legal action or closure should not be taken against your facility
The notice cautions that failure to comply will result in enforcement actions, including possible closure of the establishments.
