Rising Afrobeats act Qing Madi has spoken candidly about the financial rewards in the music industry, describing the scale of earnings as unusual compared to typical jobs.
The 19-year-old singer made the remarks during a recent appearance on the Tea With Tay podcast, where she discussed the lucrative side of performing music and the lifestyle that can come with it.
According to Qing Madi, income from live shows can be dramatically higher than what many Nigerians earn in regular employment. She explained that an artist may earn tens of millions of naira from a single performance, while an average worker might receive a monthly salary of about ₦500,000.
She used the phrase “drug money” to illustrate how unexpectedly large those payments can feel, noting that many people may not fully understand the scale of revenue artists can generate from performances.
Despite acknowledging her financial success, the singer said she intentionally avoids displaying wealth on social media. Qing Madi explained that she prefers audiences to focus on her music and identity rather than her financial status.
The Afrobeats star, whose full name is Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, added that the financial freedom she now enjoys has helped her pursue her career more independently.
Beyond discussing income, she also reflected on why music holds such a strong place in Nigerian society. Qing Madi suggested that limited access to therapy means many people turn to music as a form of escape and emotional expression.
Her comments have added to broader conversations about the economics of the music business and the role of music in everyday life across Nigeria.
