Fast-rising Afrobeats star Qing Madi has shared why she chooses to keep her financial status out of the spotlight, despite her growing success in the music industry.
Speaking during a recent appearance on the Tea with Tay podcast, the singer explained that her decision is intentional, driven by a desire to avoid being defined by wealth rather than her artistry.
According to Qing Madi, maintaining privacy around her finances allows her to stay grounded and focused on her music. She noted that while financial independence gives her greater control over her creative direction, it does not shield her entirely from industry pressures.
The singer admitted that audience preferences can sometimes influence her decisions. However, she stressed that she remains committed to maintaining quality in her work, regardless of commercial expectations.
She also reflected on the striking income gap between musicians and salaried workers in Nigeria. Describing earnings from performances as unusually high, she likened them to “drug money,” pointing to the stark contrast with typical monthly wages.
Beyond finances, Qing Madi highlighted the deeper role music plays in Nigerian society. She suggested that music often serves as a coping mechanism for many people, especially in a country where access to mental health support is limited.
According to her, Nigerians frequently push through emotional struggles without pause, making music a vital outlet. Hearing relatable stories in songs, she said, offers listeners a sense of comfort and shared experience.
Her comments add to ongoing conversations about the realities of fame, wealth, and emotional well-being within the Nigerian music space.
