The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, has emphasized that women’s rights are not mere concessions granted by men but rather fundamental human entitlements that warrant protection from all sectors of society.
This assertion came during a sideline event at the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70).
Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages at the NHRC, relayed Dr. Ojukwu’s statements in a communication released to TV360 Nigeria.
During the event, organized by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Ojukwu called on men to actively support gender equity, underscoring that women are advocating for their rights rather than seeking privileges.
Dr. Ojukwu highlighted the importance of inclusion in the pursuit of true justice, stating, “You cannot talk about women without having them at the table.”
He disclosed that the NHRC has implemented a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment and has made significant strides in enhancing women’s representation in leadership positions, with 10 out of 15 director roles now held by women.
He further noted that when women feel safe and empowered, their performance excels, adding that economic support and awareness campaigns are essential to combat gender-based violence.
Prominent Nigerian figures in attendance included the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Her Regal Majesty, Temitope Ogunwusi, wife of the Onni of Ife. Their participation underscored Nigeria’s commitment to advancing gender equality and fostering partnerships that promote justice and inclusive development.
The engagement reaffirmed the nation’s dedication to ensuring that women’s rights are acknowledged and upheld as a fundamental aspect of human rights.
