President Bola Tinubu has highlighted the importance of prioritizing national interest over personal ambition, citing former President Goodluck Jonathan as a model for selfless leadership.
Speaking on Thursday at the 10th anniversary of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Abuja, Tinubu praised Jonathan for preserving Nigeria’s democracy during a critical period and for demonstrating that public service extends beyond holding office. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President noted that the foundation reflects Jonathan’s continued commitment to the nation.
“Some leaders pursue personal interests that harm society, while others dedicate themselves to serving humanity,” Tinubu said.
He warned that democracy in Nigeria and across West Africa faces threats from extremists and power-hungry actors who undermine institutions and elections. He lauded Jonathan for showing that the nation’s sovereignty must always take precedence over individual ambition.
Tinubu also called for national unity and respect for democratic processes, urging Nigerians to accept electoral outcomes regardless of personal preference. “Democracy offers us repeated opportunities to renew our mandates. No government can succeed without the cooperation of its people, and no people can advance without a government that listens and leads with clarity,” he added.
In his remarks, Jonathan thanked dignitaries, including former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Koroma, and highlighted the foundation’s work in diplomacy, good governance, election management, and strengthening democratic institutions. He also expressed concern over recent abductions and attacks across the country, urging political leaders to prioritize the security and welfare of Nigerians.
